Congratulations to my beautiful wife and the other hard working individuals that make up the graduating class of 2014. The design for this years graduation page is exactly the same as last years, with the exception of the photograph change.
It’s nice when family gets together. We’ve had Khristine’s mother, brother and sister, their two dogs and child here. Well, I guess my mother-in-law left Sunday … or was it Saturday? I’m not really sure as my life after they all started showing up Thursday until Yesterday morning was a bit blurry 😉 Back on topic though, it’s so nice to have family and friends get together, laughing and having fun. Sometimes we get in the daily routine so much that we start to take visits with each other for granted. I can tell you that I enjoy being home, and I enjoy my space and privacy. I enjoy the occasional visit but, holy crap my house is quiet and peaceful right now. lol.
While they were here I did try to work on some new summer illustrations. Monday I started work on some little fruit illustrations, trying to put faces on them (I like cartoony). For some reason I see an orange as being quite crazy, like overly excited or mischievous maybe? Apple seems a little grouchy … pears seem like a happy sleepy little fruit. lol whatever
The Fotolia boycott got some amazing support from the community but, now that it’s been a week in action I can see that the numbers there have started climbing again. As multiple people have pointed out at Microstockgroup.com, it probably won’t make a difference at all … What difference does a million files make when these guys have 28 million, not to mention a huge customer base. People really don’t care how cheap or manipulative a company is, as long as the price is right. Well whatever I guess, at least my files aren’t there and I can stick to the other sites. Dreamstime for one has treated me quite amazingly. I’d love to see more customers there but, with the exception of my one sale at 1dollarimages it’s my best paying.
Generally, I don’t like lists in ads … Especially long lists, I’m not sure how else they would have expressed what they had to offer though. In hindsight, I think changing open to opening, or maybe grand opening would have made it seem like they were open more than May 7. The only link I could find for Piute Country Crafts is a facebook link to an album.
This weeks Jorgensen Ford advertisement is quite interesting. Funny how I don’t like to pick on other people’s designs but, I’ll tear mine to peices. Trying to come up with a font that matched the header thing didn’t really work out for me, and the green glow just made it down right Halloweenish, and I’ll have you note that Halloween is a really, really long way away from spring … and still quite a ways from Summer.
But, even with those quite obvious faults (that hindsight thing). It looks pretty good for an ad with 16 cars. I complain a lot but, I love doing these … I love my work, the work that I do and am doing. I do the best I can to help the people and the businesses in this community succeed and get the word out on whatever they’re trying to advertise, and to me that is pretty important work. In fact, the newspaper itself, everyone that works there is doing pretty important work. Thank you for letting me do it.
Anyhow, I guess that’s quite enough for today. The newspaper world is changing, it’s definitely going to take some creativity and innovation to keep it all afloat. “May you live in interesting times” I guess fits my thoughts.
This post is part of a series of posts dedicated to getting my graphic design portfolio out of my desk and into the world. Want to start from the beginning?
